The Salford Rum Company: Celebrating the History through Premium Craft Rum

The Salford Rum Company stands as a testament to the rich history and heritage of Salford Docks in the UK. This award-winning craft rum brand takes inspiration from the imports of Caribbean rums, fruits, and spices that arrived through Salford Docks during its industrial heyday in the 1900s.

Salford Docks - A Rich History

During the late 1800s and early 1900s, Salford Docks played a pivotal role as the third largest port in the UK. Among the bustling industrial imports of the time were rums, fruits, and spices from the Caribbean. The Salford Rum Company pays tribute to this era of trade and growth.

The Birth of Salford Rum

The Salford Rum Company was founded in 2018 by best friends James Harrison and Tommy Gaughan, both passionate rum enthusiasts. Recognizing a market gap for premium, craft rum, they embarked on a journey fueled by their love for rum. With just £8000 from personal savings, they turned their dream into a reality.

Salford Rum - A Unique Flavor

Salford Rum offers a distinct flavor profile that captures the essence of the Caribbean. Blending warm spices like nutmeg, cinnamon, and ginger, along with sweet vanilla notes, a hint of maple, and a touch of orange and steeped fruits, Salford Rum provides a rich and indulgent taste experience. It is crafted through a meticulous process of copper column distillation, fruit and spice infusion, and hand-bottling.

The Dirty Old Town Distillery

Nestled near the old Salford Docks and at the edge of Manchester city centre, The Dirty Old Town Distillery serves as the birthplace of Salford Rum. Here, a 380L column still named Willow takes center stage, paying homage to Salford's original name, Sealhford, meaning 'ford by the willow tree.' The distillery boasts not only a functional space for rum production but also an immersive cocktail bar decorated with captivating artwork by Dave Draws, who has also lent his talent to the bottle designs.

Expanding Reach

The success of The Salford Rum Company is evident in its widespread availability. The brand has secured listings in major retailers such as Waitrose, Morrisons, Co-op, Selfridges, and Harvey Nichols. Furthermore, Salford Rum has established a strong direct-to-consumer and online retail presence. Its influence extends to numerous pubs, bars, restaurants, and hotels across the UK, making Salford Rum a well-recognized and cherished choice among rum enthusiasts and beyond.

A Passionate Celebration

Beyond being a brand, The Salford Rum Company represents a passionate celebration of the history, heritage, and people of Salford Docks. By drawing inspiration from the rums, fruits, and spices that once graced British shores, Salford Rum connects the past with the present. It revives nostalgia while offering a modern and refined experience, paying homage to the city's remarkable past.
